Our Vice Patron, Emeritus Professor John Melville-Jones, has been awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in the General Division (AM) in today’s Australia Day honours for significant service to tertiary education in Greek, Roman and Byzantine history and numismatics. This is a wonderful achievement; please join me in congratulating John.

New Western Australian Numismatic Book

DOG REGISTRATION DISCS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA by Walter Bloom and Alf Campbell has just appeared, published by Hesperian Press. This 162 page A4 book in full colour outlines the history of dog registration discs since their first known appearance in 1898 together with details of their manufacturers. There are sections on known collections, methods of manufacture, known and estimated mintage figures up until 1920, rarity, the different types up until 1940, the range of Road Districts and Municipalities, and finally the extensive collection of Alf Campbell. There is also a brief introduction on other related collectables, including cart plates and camel and goat registration discs. The book is available from Hesperian Press at $60 plus postage, but copies can be obtained at the 28 December PNS Fair directly by advance request.

The Australian Coin Collecting Blog has noted the peaceful passing on 12th April 2018 of the beloved designer Stuart Devlin AO whose designs adorn coins of many countries including many of those you have in your pocket or wallet right now. The designer of the platypus 20 cent, the iconic mob of roos dollar, the teeny echidna 5 cent, in fact Mr Devlin designed all of Australia’s standard decimal coin reverses that have been in circulation since 1966 (except the $2 coin). Not only has Mr Devlin designed coins, but also silver art pieces, gold jewellery, sculptures, furniture and he’s even designed houses. A book Stuart Devlin Designer, Goldsmith, silversmith written by his wife Carole Devlin and her sister Victoria Kate Simkin was recently published detailing his life’s work and includes a biography which is a tribute to his achievements.

Diamond Lil’s Wild West Saloon was a theatre restaurant run by Frank Baden-Powell and Coralie Condon at the Civic Theatre Restaurant in Beaufort Street in the early 1970s. Joan Sydney appeared as ‘Diamond Lil’ with Ivan King as ‘Cecil the Sexy Sheriff’. Harry Driver, Sue Ammon (now Scrutton), Carter Edwards and Christine Mearing also featured in the cast.

Kevin Langoulant was the technical director for the Civic Theatre Restaurant as well as the Perth and Fremantle Old Time Music Halls and Dirty Dick’s.
