It is with deep sadness that I advise the death on 20 April 2011 of my good friend Haydn Powell, Patron and former President of the PNS. Haydn had not enjoyed good health for a number of years and his recent months would have been very uncomfortable for him. The funeral took place on Thursday 28 April at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, with seven members of the Perth Numismatic Society present. This was followed by a wake where there were some stories highlighting Haydn's life. An obituary will appear in due course PNS President Walter Bloom has been awarded a grant by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to carry out a project during May at the Coin Cabinet of Berlin on the mintmarks and mintmasters of German thalers from the 16th and 17th centuries, supporting his work on the coins recovered from the shipwreck of the Batavia. The Society's Patron John Melville-Jones has been awarded a Ray Jewell Silver Award by the NAA for outstanding contribution to Australian numismatics and the Numismatic Association of Australia. |
